Richard Collins of Chelmsford and Destanee Soba of Ayer are the May Athletes of the Month at Nashoba Valley Technical High School.
Richard Collins, son of James Collins and Laura Tsolas, is a junior pitcher and outfielder for the baseball team. He also runs cross-country for the Vikings. He is in the Health Assisting program and plans to become a firefighter after graduation.
Richard was nominated by coach Jeff Robinson, who wrote: “Over the month of May, Richie has led the pitching staff in innings pitched, percent of pitches for strikes, earned-run average, strikeout-to-walk ratio, no-walk innings, innings with first two batters out, and walks and hits per innings pitched.”
Destanee Soba, daughter of Jose Soba and Waleska Santini, is a track standout in outdoor track in the 100 meters and 200 meters, winning both events at every meet in which she competed. She was named Girls Track Athlete of the Year. She was also an essential part of the 4x400-meter relay team. She also plays basketball and soccer. She is in the Cosmetology program. Destanee was nominated by Victor Cuzzupe, Erin Doherty and Aaron Spencer for having an “incredible impact on the girls track team in her first year” and for having a “positive attitude that influenced her teammates.”
